Eight Mexican mayors have been killed since President Claudia Sheinbaum was inaugurated on October 1, 2024. In a horror show that still seems to be very far from ending, the narco-terrorists are still killing candidates and mayors across the failed institutional state of Mexico.
The soft-on-crime strategy of the socialist president does not appear to be having any positive effect on the quality of life for Mexico’s populace.
Just six days after Sheinbaum’s inauguration in October, Breitbart Texas reported that Alejandro Arcos, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo, was gruesomely beheaded. His killers placed his severed head atop his truck. On November 14, one of the alleged perpetrators, Germán Reyes, an ex-military officer who once served as the head prosecutor of the Chilpancingo police, was arrested for his alleged involvement with the killing.
Less than a week later, Román Ruiz Bojorquez, mayor of the Oaxacan municipality of Candelaria, Loxicha, was stabbed inside his home. They found him alive, transferred him to the hospital, where he later died due to the severity of the stabbing injuries.
On December 16. Gunmen killed Jesús Eduardo Franco, a prominent vineyard owner and mayor of Tancanhuitz, San Luis Potosí. The 27-year-old mayor was traveling in a car with three other people when hitmen intercepted and attacked him and three passengers. The three passengers who were traveling with Franco were also brutally murdered.
On May 15, 2025, Mario Hernández García, the mayor of Santiago, Oaxaca, together with two of his police escorts while traveling from the municipal capital to the community of Piedra Lisa, was targeted and ambushed by gunmen using high-powered military rifles. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the local clinic.
May 28, Isaías Rojas Ramírez, the mayor of Metlatonoc, Guerrero, was shot along with his wife. They were attacked by several armed individuals while driving. The gunmen opened fire directly at Rojas, hitting the mayor in the chest and abdomen. Rojas subsequently died on June 2.
At the beginning of this month, June 6, the mayor of Tacámbaro, Michoacán, Salvador Bastida García, along with his security detail, was attacked with high-caliber firearms while driving home. Bastida Garcia and his police escort died from their wounds later at a hospital.
The following Sunday, a commando group made up of four armed men with assault rifles stormed the Municipal Palace of San Mateo Piñas in Oaxaca, Breitbart Texas reported. The hitmen opened fire and murdered the mayor, Lilia Gema García Soto, while in a meeting. More than 60 rounds were fired at her before they fled on motorcycles. Local Authorities and federal agents are still searching for the gunmen who evaded capture.
This Tuesday, Marta Laura Mendoza, mayor of Tepalcatepec, Michoacán, was shot and killed by gunmen just outside of her home in broad daylight, Breitbart’s Cartel Chronicles reported. Her husband was also killed during the attack, and her son, according to reports, was seriously injured.
In Mexico, being a politician, an official, or an authority means risking your life without protection from the government. Being a citizen means experiencing uncontrolled violence with absent authorities and a passive “nothing happens” government that continues with a “hugs not bullets” strategy of combating extreme levels of cruel violence.
Editor’s Note: Breitbart News Foundation traveled to Mexico to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities. The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate throughout Mexico if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart News Foundation’s Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and their original Spanish. This article was written by “Diego Cervantes.”
