Feb. 5 (UPI) — Private nonfarm payrolls in January increased by 183,000 jobs, slightly better than figures in December, according to the monthly ADP national report released on Wednesday.

The ADP number beat out the revised December jobs total of 176,000 and predictions by Dow Jones economists, which forecasted that 150,000 jobs were created. ADP had initially reported 122,000 jobs in December.

The service-providing sector provided the bulk of the jobs created with 190,000 new positions while manufacturing saw the largest drop, losing 13,000 jobs.

Medium-sized businesses, those who hire from 50 to 499 workers, added 92,000 jobs.

“We had a strong start to 2025, but it masked a dichotomy in the labor market,” Nela Richardson, ADP’s chief economist, said in a statement. “Consumer-facing industries drove hiring, while job growth was weaker in businesses services and production.”

ADP reported a 4.7% annual increase in payrolls of workers who stayed at their jobs while job changers saw a 6.8% increase.

“Beginning January 2025, ADP’s Pay Insights measure captures nearly 14.8 million individual play change observations each month, up from nearly 10 million when launched,” ADP said.
