WATCH – Jon Stewart Tells Trump Supporters: ‘You Don’t Own’ America
Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart guest-hosted The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night, launching into a 13-minute rant about Donald Trump, Fox News, and Christian conservative Republican voters that was reminiscent of the sharp attacks he delivered during his tenure on Comedy Central.
The pair began the segment by celebrating the resignation of embattled former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes. Then Stewart took over.
The retired late-night host ripped Donald Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, calling the party’s presidential nominee an “angry groundhog” who “just vomited on everybody for an hour.”
Stewart quickly turned his attention to Fox News host Sean Hannity — whom Stewart referred to as “Lumpy” — and Republican voters, asserting that they will now have to accept Trump, who’s a “thin-skinned narcissist with no government experience.”
“That sounds exactly like Barack Obama,” Stewart joked.
Doubling down, Stewart tapped into his vintage Daily Show persona and declared that conservatives “don’t own patriotism.”
“You feel you’re this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that. This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no ‘real America.’ You don’t own it,” Stewart charged.
“You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police, and firefighters,” he added.
The segment ended with Stewart launching into an alliteration-fueled diatribe, before Colbert stopped him from cursing live on-air for the second time.
“The ‘C’ next to your names don’t stand for constitutional or conservative, but cravenly, convenient…” Stewart said as Colbert cut him off with the deafening sound of an airhorn.
Stewart’s appearance on Late Show comes as the CBS program has struggled through months of disastrous ratings.
